Background

Brief

This project was a part of an Industry and Community Project (ICPU) at the University of Sydney. We were challenged to design a solution to a real-world complex problem. We partnered with the Univerisity Admissions Center to consult, pitch, and collaborate on this project.

As stated by the Australian Government Department of Education (2023).

In September 2023, alongside the release of the Employment White Paper, the Australian Government announced it would consult widely to develop a business case for a National Skills Passport.

A National Skills Passport has the potential to help with education and employment decisions. It could help workers promote their qualifications, upskill and reskill, and help businesses find staff with the right skills. People who participate could view and share evidence of their skills and qualifications in a trusted, seamless, and integrated digital system. A National Skills Passport could also connect with other relevant services, make life easier for employers, employees and jobseekers, and help people upskill and reskill.

Job Seeking and Tertiary Education Application is not empathetic to Australia’s equity groups

Focal Issue:

We aim to articulate multiple phases within a ‘lifelonglearning journey, for all Australians looking to reskill or upskill

Our Aim:

  • Seek & LinkedIn overemphasise quantifiable achievements

  • Limited ability to identify professional & educational opportunities (Angela, 2015)

  • High rate of discrimination against people from marginalised groups (Kroll et al., 2021)

Barriers from existing hiring approaches:

  • No self-promotion necessary

  • Easy access to professional & educational opportunities

  • Streamlined job application process

  • Showcase soft skills and personal growth

I presented this prototype live through Figma to UAC. Our industry partners' feedback on this project was all positive.

I would like to note, for the scope of the project our group acknowledges the verification for credentials and skills has not been explicitly solved. The scope and time to complete this project limited our ability to do so. We assume verification would be completed through a third party.
